The New Curator: Exhibiting Architecture and Design examines the challenges inherent in exhibiting design ideas. Traditionally, exhibitions of architecture and design have predominantly focused on displaying finished outcomes or communicating a work through representation.

In this ground-breaking new book, Fleur Watson unveils the emergence of the ‘new curator’. Instead of exhibiting finished works or artefacts, the rise of ‘performative curation’ provides a space where experimental methods for encountering design ideas are being tested. Here, the role of the curator is not that of ‘custodian’ or ‘expert’ but with the intent to create a shared space of encounter with audiences.

To illustrate this phenomenon, the book explores a diverse, international range of exhibitions. Fleur Watson

Fleur Watson PhD is a curator, creative producer and author. Her academic and cultural leadership extends across a broad spectrum of creative disciplines including architecture, design, visual art, and expanded spatial practices. Fleur is an Associate Professor, School of Architecture & Design at RMIT University and founder of independent curatorial practice Something Together. She is an experienced researcher within an ‘integrated scholarship’ framework with a focus on curating contemporary art and design within a cross–disciplinary context. She has co-created and led curatorial projects, design studios and industry workshops with a diverse range of institutions including RMIT University, Melbourne and, internationally, at Innsbruck University, Austria; Design Museum, London, and the Venice International Architecture Biennale.
In 2021, the UK-based publisher Routledge released Fleur’s authored book The New Curator : Exhibiting Architecture & Design which is also due for release in the Korean language in early 2024. This publication builds on Fleur’s practice-based PhD titled ‘The Agency of Encounter’ completed in 2016 at RMIT University. Fleur is a Board member for the not-for-profit organisation “Open House Melbourne” and was formerly OHM’s Executive Director and Chief Curator from 2020–2022. From 2013–2020, Fleur was Curator at RMIT Design Hub Gallery – a purpose-designed project space dedicated to cross-disciplinary exhibitions. Fleur managed the creative direction, curation and program from the Design Hub’s official opening to the public and co-curated a diverse range of influential exhibitions and research-led projects.

Kim Sang-kyu

He studied design in college and graduate school and received her PhD in design archive research. He has been practicing design curation and archival research since he worked as a chair designer at FURSYS Inc.’s and curated exhibitions such as droog design, Korean Design, and The New Vision from László Moholy-Nagy while working as a curator at the Design Museum at the Arts Center of Korea, and conducts workshops and research on maker culture and Korean design at Jayul Design Lab. He is currently an associate professor of design at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. He is the author of About Design, Rediscovering the Chair, and History of Things, and the translator of Design for Society.

Chung Dah-young

Chung Dah-young is a curator at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, specializing in architecture and design exhibitions and writing. She has curated significant exhibitions, including Diary of Drawings: Chong Ki-yong Architecture Archive (2013), Itami Jun: Sculpting the Wind (2014), Experiments of Architopia (2015), Paper and Concrete: Korean Modern Architecture Movements 1987–1997 (2017), Kim Chung-up: Dialogue (2018), The Olympic Effect: Korean Architecture and Design of the 80s and 90s (2020), and Young Architects 2023: Annotations for a Museum (2023). She has also contributed as a co-author and planner to books such as Pavilions: Filling Cities with Emotions (Hongsi, 2015) and Architecture, Exhibition, Curating (Mati, 2019). She served as a co-curator for the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale (2018) and was an adjunct professor in the Department of Industrial Design at Konkuk University (2019–2021).
