Contemporary book design culture seen through 10 book designers

This book deals with 10 contemporary book designers–Massin, Jost Hochuli, Richard Hollis, Chung Byoungkyoo, Lu Jingren, Suzuki Hitoshi, Chip Kidd, Roger Willems, Marcus Dreßen, and David Pearson–and their works. Working in different countries and with different cultural backgrounds, these designers look at the time and culture surrounding them through their books.

Kay Jun

She studied literature at Ewha Womans University and Seoul National University and pursued visual design at the Graduate School of Hongik University. After graduation, she worked as the publishing team leader at the design studio AGI Society. Starting with her master’s thesis, Photography as Text and Society as Image: Handling of Photography in Twen」 (2006), she has focused her research on the intersections of photography, text, and design. Currently, she runs the photography book publishing house Aprilsnow (사월의눈), which continues her exploration of these themes. To date, she has curated five photography books and contributed numerous articles on graphic design to various publications. Her authored works include 10 Art Directors of the World (Ahn Graphics, 2009) and Bb: From Basel to Bauhaus (PaTI, 2014, co-author). She also co-translated Graphic Design: A User’s Manual (Semicolon, 2015).

Jeong Jae-wan

Jeong Jae-wan graduated from Hongik University with a degree in Visual Communication Design and began his career as a book designer at Jung Byung-kyu Publishing Design and Minumsa Publishing Group. Inspired by a strong interest in street letters, he has held four solo exhibitions titled Letterscape since 2008. In 2018, he presented Jeong Jae-wan: Book Design and also Letterscape (Bukseong-ro) in 2019 as an exhibition focused on regional visual culture. He has co-authored several books, including 10 Great Book Designers of the World, Complete Works Design, Apartment Letters, and Designed Matter. Books designed by Jeong, such as Natural History of Industry and Ways of Working, respectively won the Grand Prize at the 1st Hansol Insper Awards and was named one of the “Most Beautiful Books in Korea” in 2022. He is currently a professor in the Visual Communication Design Department at Yeungnam University, a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and the Design History Society of Korea, an editorial board member of The Seoul Review of Books, and the lead book designer for the photography book publisher Aprilsnow Press.
