The First Autobiography of Ando Tadao: A Master of Architecture and Guerrilla Architect Who Pushes Boundaries

A Message of Hope from Ando Tadao, Who Has Battled Architecture for 40 Years with the Philosophy of Light and Shadow

“This book is not a tale of glamorous success. If my blunt and unembellished life story inspires even one person in Korea to find courage in life, I will be satisfied. If passion is defined as the freedom of thought, then youth is not a phase of life but a state of mind. I am still living my youth.”

From professional boxer to self-taught architect, Ando’s journey has been filled with challenges and failures. Most of his efforts ended unsuccessfully. Yet, clinging to even the faintest glimmer of possibility, he poured everything into following that small light of hope, living each moment with determination.

For Ando, architecture that brings joy is architecture that challenges the new. It is about persevering through preconceived notions, rigid conventions, and economic constraints, and never ceasing to challenge boundaries. Architecture without challenges cannot move people. This belief is the compass that continues to guide Ando in his approach to architecture.
