서울대학교 미술대학과 동 대학원에서 시각디자인과 환경디자인을 전공했다. 그리고 1995년 (재)한국색채연구소에서 근무하며 색채를 처음 접하게 되었다. 이후 이화여자대학교 색채디자인연구소 선임연구원을 거쳐 자신의 연구소인 문은배색채디자인에서 색채연구에 몰입했다. 주요 연구로는 감성기반 「디지털색채팔레트 연구」 「수출형 색채배색 소프트웨어 연구」 「한국 지역색 추출 및 표준감성 연구」 「색각이상을 위한 디지털 프로그램 개발」 「한국의 전통색 프로그램 개발연구」 등 전문 연구를 수행했다. 지은 책으로는 『색채디자인 교과서』 『한국의 전통색』이 있으며 (사)색채학회 추천으로 컬러리스트 도서를 저술했다. 현재 청운대학교 교수로 재직하고 있다.
