조경을 실천하고 연구하며 가르친다. 서울대학교 조경학과와 펜실베이니아대학교 디자인대학원에서 조경을 공부했다. 2005년부터 서울대학교 조경학과에서 학생들을 가르치고 있으며, 2014년부터 조경설계사무소 JWL의 디자인 디렉터로 활동하고 있다. 정원에서 도시 공공 공간에 이르기까지 다양한 범위를 넘나들며, 공간이 지닌 가치를 탐구하고 이를 구현해 왔다. 절제된 미감과 정제된 구성을 바탕으로, 시간이 흐를수록 깊어지는 공간을 만든다. 디에이치 아너힐즈 헤리티지가든, 성수동 우란문화재단, 호텔신라 에르메스가든, 남산동 LG리더십센터 등의 조경을 설계하고 만들었으며, 합천 황매산 군립공원 마스터플랜, 광주 전남·일신방직 부지 내 공원, 여의도공원 재조성 등 큰 규모의 조경 계획, 설계를 수행했다.

홍익대학교 산업디자인학과 교수로, 지능형 인터랙션 디자인 연구실을 운영한다. 삼성, 마이크로소프트, 노키아 등 AI 산업 최전선에서 20년가량 활약해왔고, 현재 네이버 검색 디자인 설계 총괄 이사를 지내며 생성형 AI 검색 디자인 설계를 총괄한다. 뉴욕 파슨스스쿨오브디자인에서 커뮤니케이션 디자인을 전공했고 영국 왕립예술학교에서 디자인 인터랙션 석사 학위를 받았다. 생성형 AI가 가져올 검색 패러다임의 변화와, 기술과 인간의 조화로운 공존을 연구한다.
