The flower and animal paintings in the book refer to traditional paintings that captured flowers, birds, insects, plants, animals, and landscapes
Traditional paintings of flowers, birds, insects, plants, and other animals have long been referred to as “flower and bird paintings” (hwajohwa) in Korean. This book redefines those paintings as “flower and animal paintings” (hwahweyeongmohwa) in a broader sense. It then introduces specific artists and works that span ancient times right up to the present. While looking into flower and animal paintings, including those by Shin Saimdang, Jeong Seon, Kim Jeong Hui as well as Cheon Kyeong Ja’s Flower and Kwak Suk Son’s Festival, readers will be able to reconsider the tradition behind all of this and think of our future in a new light.
